An exact score earns five points. Predict the correct result and finish within one goal of the actual score and you receive three points.

A correct result earns two points, while getting within one goal can still earn one point even when the final result goes against you.

That scoring system means league positions can move quickly.

A player who entered every prediction in Gameweek 1 is not guaranteed to stay ahead of someone joining in Gameweek 2.

Find a couple of exact scores while the players above you collect only one or two points from the same fixtures and the gap can disappear remarkably quickly.

Gameweek 1 Showed Why Correct Scores Are Difficult

The opening Premier League weekend also supplied a useful reminder that predicting football scores is rarely straightforward.

Defending champions Arsenal started strongly with a 3-0 victory over Coventry City at the Emirates.

Anybody expecting the established Premier League clubs to dominate the promoted teams, however, soon received a warning.

Hull City produced one of the biggest results of the opening round, beating Manchester United 2-0.

United had most of the possession but couldn't turn it into goals. For Correct Score Game players, it was exactly the sort of fixture capable of wiping out thousands of apparently sensible predictions.

Ipswich Town also made a memorable start, beating Sunderland 2-1 with a late winner.

Late Goals Can Change Everything

Newcastle United and Liverpool gave score predictors another lesson.

Tottenham endured one of the toughest starts of the opening weekend, losing 3-0 to Brentford.

Everton began with a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace, while Leeds United defeated Nottingham Forest 1-0.

Chelsea and Fulham then finished the opening round with five goals, Chelsea winning the London derby 3-2.

Put those results together and Gameweek 1 contained just about everything.

Comfortable wins, shocks, clean sheets, one-goal games, a draw and a match decided by a late goal all appeared in the first ten fixtures of the campaign.

What Did We Learn for Gameweek 2?

One weekend is nowhere near enough evidence to decide how the whole Premier League season will develop.

It has, however, already given us a few things to think about before entering the next set of predictions.

• Arsenal still look formidable. The champions began their title defence with a convincing three-goal victory.
• Promoted teams cannot simply be written off. Hull and Ipswich both showed how dangerous newcomers can be.
• Big-name clubs are not automatic selections. Manchester United and Tottenham both lost without scoring.
• Late goals matter. Ipswich and Liverpool both produced result-changing moments at the end of matches.
• Exact scores remain extremely difficult. Gameweek 1 produced everything from 1-0 and 2-0 results to a 3-2 derby.

Those are useful clues, but Gameweek 2 will almost certainly create another set of surprises.
