Is Man City Selling Rodri to Barcelona a Huge Mistake?

Manchester City are preparing to lose another huge part of the Pep Guardiola era, with Rodri expected to join Barcelona after City reportedly accepted a £65.4 million offer for the Spain midfielder.

There is an obvious financial argument for the deal. Rodri is 30, has entered the final year of his Manchester City contract and has recently undergone minor back surgery.

But Manchester City are not a club whose success is normally judged by how much money they make selling players.

They are judged by Premier League titles, Champions League runs and trophies.

And after Arsenal demolished City 3-0 in the Community Shield, allowing one of the most influential midfielders of the Guardiola era to leave suddenly feels like a much bigger gamble.

Is Selling Rodri Really Good Business?

Viewed purely as a transfer, receiving around £65 million for a 30-year-old player with only one year remaining on his contract looks sensible.

Barcelona clearly believe Rodri still has plenty to offer. The Spanish champions are expected to give him a four-year contract, taking him well into his thirties.

City appear to have reached a different conclusion about the value of keeping him.

The problem is that replacing Rodri has never simply been about finding another defensive midfielder.

At his best, Rodri controlled the rhythm of City's matches. He protected the defence, recycled possession, stopped counter-attacks and allowed City's more attacking players to operate with greater freedom.

His importance was recognised when he won the 2024 Ballon d'Or, but City supporters had already seen for years how influential he could be.

Arsenal's 3-0 Win Was a Warning

Community Shield results should never be treated like Premier League results.

It is one match at the very beginning of the season, and teams are still finding fitness, integrating new players and adjusting tactically.

Even so, Manchester City's 3-0 defeat against Arsenal in Cardiff was difficult to ignore.

Enzo Maresca's first competitive match as City manager could hardly have started worse. Riccardo Calafiori put Arsenal ahead inside the opening 30 seconds before Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard completed an emphatic victory for the Premier League champions.

Rodri did not play after only recently returning to training following minor back surgery.

His absence therefore cannot explain everything that went wrong, but the match did demonstrate just how much work City still have to do as they begin life after Guardiola.

Are Manchester City Going Backwards?

It is far too early to declare that Manchester City are in decline.

But it is reasonable to ask whether the club is trying to change too much at once.

Guardiola has gone. Maresca is implementing his own ideas. The squad is changing and one of the defining players of City's most successful era is now preparing to leave.

Arsenal, in contrast, looked like a team with continuity.

Mikel Arteta remains in charge, his players understand what he wants from them and winning last season's Premier League title appears to have given Arsenal even greater confidence.

That contrast was obvious in Cardiff.

Arsenal looked ready to begin a title defence. City looked like a team starting a new cycle.

City Cannot Simply Replace Rodri's Name on the Teamsheet

Manchester City will not enter the season without midfield options. The club has already invested heavily in reshaping the squad and may still make further moves before the transfer window closes.

But replacing Rodri's position is not necessarily the same as replacing Rodri.

His ability to dictate games became fundamental to Guardiola's Manchester City.

A new player may eventually perform that role just as effectively, or Maresca may build a midfield that functions completely differently.

Either way, City are taking a risk by making that transition at the same time as changing manager.

The Guardiola Safety Net Has Gone

This may be the biggest difference between this Manchester City team and the one supporters have become accustomed to watching.

Under Guardiola, even a heavy early-season defeat could usually be dismissed.

City had already demonstrated repeatedly that they could recover, produce long winning runs and solve problems during the season.

Maresca does not yet have that luxury.

Every major defeat and every major transfer decision will inevitably lead to questions about how successfully City are navigating the post-Guardiola era.

Selling Rodri immediately after losing 3-0 to their biggest recent title rivals ensures those questions will only become louder.

Could Manchester City Regret the Rodri Deal?

The answer may ultimately depend on what happens next.

If Maresca's midfield quickly clicks, City challenge for the title and Rodri's replacement establishes himself, receiving more than £60 million for a player approaching the end of his contract could look like excellent business.

If City struggle to control matches, fall behind Arsenal and spend the season searching for the authority they previously had in midfield, the decision will look very different.

Barcelona are betting that Rodri still has several elite seasons ahead of him.

Manchester City are effectively betting that they can move on without him.

After what Arsenal showed us in the Community Shield, that suddenly feels like a very important bet.

What Does This Mean for the Premier League?

Arsenal will begin the new Premier League season as defending champions, while City enter a campaign without Guardiola on the touchline for the first time in a decade.

The Community Shield does not decide the Premier League title, but Arsenal's performance certainly gave us something to think about.

City now have to prove that Cardiff was merely an early setback rather than a sign of a wider gap developing between the two clubs.

Rodri's departure would make that challenge even more fascinating.
