The new English football season is almost here, with Premier League champions Arsenal facing FA Cup winners Manchester City in the 2026 Community Shield.

The traditional curtain-raiser takes place on Sunday, August 16, just five days before the 2026/27 Premier League season officially begins.

For football fans, it is the first major chance to see two of the country's biggest teams in competitive action before another 38-game Premier League campaign gets underway.

When Is the 2026 Community Shield?

Arsenal play Manchester City on Sunday, August 16, 2026, with kick-off scheduled for 3pm BST.

This year's Community Shield will not be played at Wembley Stadium. Instead, the match takes place at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.

Cardiff has plenty of history with the competition. The city hosted the Community Shield six times between 2001 and 2006 while Wembley was being rebuilt, meaning the match returns to the Welsh capital for the first time in 20 years.

Why Are Arsenal and Manchester City Playing?

Arsenal earned their place in the Community Shield by winning the 2025/26 Premier League title.

Manchester City qualified by winning the 2026 FA Cup, bringing the winners of England's two biggest domestic competitions together for the traditional opening match of the new season.

It also gives both clubs an opportunity to collect the first silverware of 2026/27 before attention immediately turns to the Premier League.

Arsenal Start Their Premier League Title Defence

For Arsenal, the Community Shield represents the first competitive step in their attempt to retain the Premier League title.

There will be very little time between the trip to Cardiff and the beginning of the league campaign.

Arsenal have the honour of opening the entire 2026/27 Premier League season when they host newly promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium on Friday, August 21 at 8pm.

That makes the Community Shield an interesting final test before points, league positions and correct-score predictions start to matter.

Manchester City Looking to Start With More Silverware

Manchester City arrive in Cardiff as FA Cup holders and will be looking to carry that winning momentum into the new campaign.

A meeting with the reigning Premier League champions should also provide a useful early indication of how City are shaping up before their league season begins.
