Amazon founder Jeff Bezos could soon become one of the biggest names involved in Premier League ownership, with a billionaire consortium reportedly closing in on a deal to buy a major stake in Liverpool.
The proposed investment would see around 30% of Liverpool change hands in a deal reportedly worth approximately £1.35 billion. However, this is not currently a full Jeff Bezos takeover of Liverpool, with Fenway Sports Group (FSG) expected to remain the club's controlling owner.
Reports suggest an announcement about the transaction could now be close.
Is Jeff Bezos Buying Liverpool?
Not outright. Bezos is reportedly part of an investment group seeking to acquire roughly one-third of Liverpool rather than buying the Premier League club in full.
The consortium is led by British businessman Amit Bhatia, the former Queens Park Rangers co-owner and son-in-law of billionaire steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal.
Bezos is not the only major technology billionaire reportedly involved. Eduardo Saverin, one of the co-founders of Facebook, is also part of the investor group.
According to Sky News, Fenway Sports Group is preparing for an announcement about the transaction.
How Much Is the Liverpool Deal Worth?
The figures being reported underline just how valuable Liverpool has become.
The consortium is reportedly close to purchasing approximately 30% of the club for around £1.35 billion. That price would imply an overall Liverpool valuation of roughly £4.5 billion.
It would represent an extraordinary increase in the club's value since FSG acquired Liverpool for around £300 million in 2010.
Talks over a major minority investment are not new. Reports emerged that FSG was discussing the sale of a significant stake with Bhatia's consortium, with Bezos subsequently linked with the group.
Who Is Behind the Liverpool Investment?
Although Jeff Bezos is the name likely to attract the most attention, he is not reported to be leading the consortium.
Amit Bhatia is at the head of the investor group. He already has considerable experience in English football after previously being involved with Queens Park Rangers.
The consortium also reportedly includes Eduardo Saverin, who co-founded Facebook before going on to become a major technology investor.
Bezos brings another level of financial power to the group. He founded Amazon in 1994 and built it into one of the world's largest companies.

Would Jeff Bezos Own Liverpool?
Bezos would become an investor in Liverpool if the reported transaction is completed, but that is very different from becoming the club's outright owner.
Fenway Sports Group has controlled Liverpool since 2010 and would remain the majority owner under the deal currently being reported.
FSG's sporting interests extend beyond Liverpool and include Major League Baseball's Boston Red Sox. The group has previously brought outside investors into its sporting businesses without giving up overall control.
That distinction is important amid headlines linking Bezos with Liverpool. As things stand, this is a proposed major minority investment rather than a confirmed Jeff Bezos takeover.
Could a Full Liverpool Takeover Happen Later?
A stake of around 30% would be significant enough to immediately raise questions about Liverpool's longer-term ownership.
However, there is currently no confirmation that FSG has agreed to sell Liverpool completely or that Bezos, Bhatia, Saverin or the wider consortium intends to pursue full control of the club.
A minority investment should therefore not be treated as evidence that a full takeover is inevitable.
What Could the Investment Mean for Liverpool?
The obvious question for Liverpool supporters is what the arrival of billionaire investors could mean for the club on and off the pitch.
A £1.35 billion purchase of shares does not automatically mean that £1.35 billion would be handed to Liverpool to spend on transfers. The exact structure of the transaction, including whether any new capital is being injected directly into the club, will determine its immediate financial impact.
What does appear increasingly possible is that Liverpool could soon have some of the biggest names in global business involved in its ownership structure.
When Could the Liverpool Deal Be Announced?
Reports indicate that FSG could make an announcement about the transaction soon.
The deal has not yet been officially completed, so the details could still change before a formal announcement.
An official statement from Liverpool or Fenway Sports Group would provide a much clearer picture of the size of the stake, the final valuation and exactly how Bezos and the other investors will fit into Liverpool's ownership structure.
